Growing ground-durable eucalypts is an exciting new opportunity for New Zealand's landowners.
2021 marks the start of a new phase for the NZDFI, as the first generation of our genetically improved 'Xylogene' planting stock will be established.
Our vision is for a network of regional hardwood industries across the North Island and northern South Island by 2050. These industries will be supplied by sustainable durable eucalypt forests grown in surrounding wood supply catchments. The forests will be established over the next 30 years by farmers and forest owners keen to diversify into a promising alternative land-use.
These 'Guidelines for Growers' are for landowners and their land management advisers, to help with decisions around whether or not to invest in durable eucalypts, and to provide advice on how to successfully establish and manage these trees. We want to ensure that people who choose to grow durable eucalypts are well-rewarded for their investment.
Join us in our quest to diversify the New Zealand forest industry, create regional jobs and wealth, and deliver environmental benefits.
